Welcome back to Nerds Without Pants! We’re coming in a bit late this, time, because Julian got real dang sick after we recorded. Thankfully you won’t notice that in the episode, and it’s a pretty good one, even if we didn’t have much new to say this week.

No time for the usual show notes, but we complete the semifinals of the Nerds Without Pants Video Game Cage Match championship tournament, get some more Elden Ring, talk some new games in Norco and A Memoir Blue, and then we talk some SOPFFO (Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin). If you want to hear even more on that, check out Julian on the latest episode of the Mage Cast!

Just a last minute entry as I'm nodding off!

Opening match: Can we be sure that Super Mario isn't a character in Chrono Cross?  Can we really be sure?  Chrono Cross wins.

Closing match: Say it with me: "SUPER BOOTSPORK."  Chex Quest wins.

I'll vote for Super Mario Odyssey.  It's not my favorite 3-D Mario game, but it's still pretty good.  And it got a cereal that you can scan as an amiibo, how cool is that?  Sorry Chrono Cross, you didn't get a cereal.

Speaking of cereal, I have a lot of fond memories of Chex Quest because I reviewed it for The Dallas Morning News back in the day as a joke and didn't expect them to publish it.  But they did anyway and I got a lot of positive feedback for it.  But even so, Tetris still wins.  It's one of my top three favorite puzzle games alongside Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo and Puzzle Bobble.  Speaking of which, I'd better fire up the Switch this weekend and play Tetris 99 a bunch so I can get that Kirby and the Forgotten Land skin!

Don't forget to listen to my podcast, too, when you get a chance!

Opening Match: Mario is too busy getting busy with Peach and possibly Pauline, so he literally phones it in. As in, he phones the ring and tells them to declare him the winner. Which they do. Chrono Cross resigns itself to a consolation prize of a night for one at the Desert Sands Motel in Stanfield, Arizona, where it has only the company of a 1974 issue of Playboy and the smell of the Stanfield stockyards.

Closing Match: Ched Quest is doing well, but Tetris gets a Tetris. The resulting block explosion squashes Chex Quest into the ceiling. Chex Quest sounds surprisingly like Doomguy when he dies.
