This time on Backloggers, I'm joined by two new guests, Chris and Jamie, to discuss our second retro game, the Playstation classic Alundra. On the block for discussion are some of the other games in the "Stalker" franchise (it's not what you think!) Working Designs legacy and our relative histories with their titles, and our familiarity with similar games, like the Zelda franchise.
So, not gonna lie, this game doesn't always play fair like we discuss on the show, so if you've decided to play along, be prepared. We've decided this will be a two part show, so we'll see you in a few weeks. Have fun!
I was about to say that Alundra was the first RPG I ever played but that honour would go to Temple of Apshai on C64.
Alundra was the first RPG I played on the PSX and I remember dying a lot. Mainly because I wasn't paying attention or following the story properly.
It is very much like a Zelda game.
I now have it digitally thanks to PSN. I really should get back into it.
Yeah you should. It's a really good game, although some of the mechanics haven't aged well.

I have this on PSN and always wanted to play it, but some of the conversations you guys have had about this game make me hesitant -- about some of the mechanics that haven't aged well. But I'm still curious about it. Maybe sometime I'll get to it.
In my opinion, it's worth at least trying it out. I really like the game despite its flaws.
Play it Snee, Plaaaay it!
I got this way back in the day on PS1, still have it too. Sadly I have never beat it and I have actually started it twice. It really has a personality all its own and has a much darker tone than any of the Zelda games. I think anyone who is a Zelda fan or a fan of action RPGs should give it a shot. It can be tough though both in regards to puzzles and combat, just a little fair warning.
Freudian mushroom headed enemies? My ideas,they werez stolen! I must be senile, I cannot remember if I played Alundra or not. A shame,it seems a bit like the Y's games and I love those! (Though the frustrating jump mechanics would probably get under my skin after awhile)
Thankfully the jumping isn't consitantly bad, but when it's bad it's bad.
I think it's pretty cheap on PSN if you want to play along. I've found the game to be more fun than frustrating so far. Some of the stuff I really don't understand, like no map? Really?

Ben, do you still have either a PS1 or PS2? Its worth hunting down. It's certainly not the worst RPG/Adventure hybrid I've ever played.
Ben has a PSP so he can buy it from PSN
I have a psx eddition of Alundra and the fact I can play it on my ps3 makes it awedome.
You guys seem really into these older games. I might have to do more of them :D
