Final Fantasy X HD was one of the feathers in the cap of the PS Vita when it was announced, and then things went dark on the project for quite some time. Today, Square Enix unveiled the first trailer for the game, and confirmed that Final Fantasy X-2 is also getting the HD treatment. Unfortunately for PS Vita owners, this announcement isn’t all great news…
The trailer is the first time that Final Fantasy X has been shown running in HD, and it looks like Square Enix are doing right by series fans when it comes to the remastering process. Even though the company has been well known for re-releasing past titles on numerous other formats and machines, this marks the first time that one of their older games has gotten the HD upgrade. Final Fantasy X-2 was frustratingly not shown in action in the trailer, but the game is still slated for a 2013 release, so hopefully more will be shown of both games at E3.
With the announcement trailer comes the confirmation of a rumor from last week: namely, that Final Fantasy X and X-2 will be sold separately on the PS Vita, while both games are packed onto the same disc on the PS3. This may be due to PS Vita cartridge constraints, but Square Enix has been known to charge what many would believe to be exorbitant prices for their portable games. It’s sure to come as a blow to gamers that support their PS Vitas, especially since no mention of the Cross Buy option has been mentioned.
On the plus side, both HD remasters are said to be the International versions. For those that don’t know, Final Fantasy X and X-2 were re-released in Japan with additional content; in the case of FF X this included an Expert Sphere Grid and Dark Aeon bosses to fight. There was also a bonus DVD with behind the scenes footage and interviews, but there’s no word yet on if this content will be in the package. Final Fantasy X-2 got three new dress spheres (read: job classes) and Last Mission: an 80 level dungeon that takes place a few months after the conclusion of the main game. On every 10th level of the dungeon a cutscene plays out that gives insight into the lives of YRP after the events of X-2, and every 20th level features a boss fight.
We’ll have more information as we get it, but for now, enjoy this first glimpse of Final Fantasy X in HD glory.

Eh, they took a chance, I'll give them that, but to me it always came across like they were trying too hard. Like OMG LOOK WE'RE FF AND WE CAN BE METAL *hornz* I mean, I love metal, but that just made me cringe. Something else would have fit that scene better in my opinion.
Metal is great, and everyone knows Nobuo is a fan of metal, but the intro to X was just derpy. I'm not a fan of FFX or X-2, though this re-release might make me give it another chance. I'm totally that "Man, Final Fantasy X sux! Tidus is lame! Waah!" guy haha.
Tidus still sucks; FFX is still awesome.

I loved FF X back then, and a big part of that was because I loved the characters, especially Tidus and Wakka. Still do, and I'm really looking forward to playing through both games again this year.
Good to know he has legit fans; as a boy with daddy issues you'd think I'd like him more, but he just got under my skin sometimes...still prefer him to Cloud & Squall's brood-off though.

I think I would have liked him a lot more if the pant legs on his OskKosh B'gosh get-up were the same length.
And that metal track was pretty awesome, for a FF game. I remember my younger self saying "whoooooa" the first time I heard it. Finally, some non-orchestral badassery in my Final Fantasy games. The grunting vocal track goes well with the blitzball players getting punished. Certainly no Lamb of God or anything, but whatyagonnado.
Stay tuned for 2021, when people are talking about how elite it was when Final Fantasy XIII had such a driving narrative before letting you loose in a large open world.
I don't think Tidus was a horrible character as he was written, just kinda blah. That voice acting didn't do him any favors though. I think that has a lot to do with why fans don't like him very much.
He's definitely a fine character, but you're right, the voice acting... yeesh. His relationship with his dad had the potential to be a powerful issue, but with his delivery, he sometimes comes off as a petulant twerp. It didn't stop the story from having clout, but certainly took away when it should have added. I was always fairly ambivalent about him, overall; his ignorance about Spira worked ok with the actor's take. In my opinion, Spira's really the star of the show in this entry. Either way, I'm excited to tear into some Expert Sphere Grid and the Dark Aeons.
For me, it was the novelty of having a dumb jock thrown into a crazy situation as a protagonist. Tidus doesn't belong in battle at the beginning, but it's cool to see him grow, and his Super Positivity Power works to slowly bring Yuna out of her shell. This is also why I think X-2 works so well, because it's a story of a woman that thought she was destined to die learning how to live.
Too bad there's no cross play. Need to buy X & X-2 separately for Vita. Just Boooo!

Paine from X-2 is one of the coolest FF characters ever. I can't play these games again though because I already know what happens. I wish they'd remake Type-0 in HD instead.
I cannot wait for these games! My #1 reason to finally get a Vita.
FF X to me was one of the better games in the series. Of course it had the distinction of "blowing me away" on account it was one of the first games I played on the PS2. lol.

I'm not hatin' on FF X-2, but it kinda funny how all the footage is of X and they just kinda slip X-2 in there at the end. "Look at this! Final Fantasy X in glorious HD! Oh, and the sequel is on the disc too.... FINAL FANTASY X IN HD!
I don't think Tidus or FFX suck, although Auron is the king of badass in that game. Still like FFXII better though. However, I will definitely be getting the PS3 version of FFX HD.
Loved FFX back in the day; to date, it's the only mainline FF game I've ever finished. I can't WAIT to pick this up for my PS3 and Vita.
I wasn't going to get X-2 if they were separate anyway, so it's no real loss for me on the Vita end of things. :p
