Last year’s Shadows of the Damned was well-known for two things. The Grasshopper Manufacture game was a dream collaboration of Suda 51 (No More Heroes), Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill), and Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil). It was also a colossal flop, selling a meager 24,000 copies in its first week on store shelves. Not a company to be held down by disappointing sales, it sounds like Grasshopper is eager to do another chapter in the life of Garcia F’ing Hotspur.
Even though the company has recently been involved in a number of smaller digital titles like the newly released Sine Mora and the upcoming Black Knight Sword, people within Grasshopper want to do a new Shadows of the Damned game. “I’m thinking sequel, actually,” said Akira Yamaoka to Eurogamer. “I can’t tell you here, but clearly I’d like to.”
“I think it’s really difficult to be successful with a new IP,” said Suda 51 at TGS last year. “You really need an extraordinary amount of support to have a new franchise be successful.”
Suda is hoping that their next game, Lollipop Chainsaw, will get plenty of support by publisher Warner Interactive. A similar deal might be struck with EA if Grasshopper can get Shadows of the Damned 2: Damn Harder (probably not what it would be titled) off the ground. EA also published the original Shadows game.
Do want, please make.
It's a real shame that the first title didn't get the recognition it deserved. It certainly had some issues, but in a sea of "safe bets" Shadows was a tropical island. I'm hoping a sequel somehow gets made.
YES please! I love how Suda never loses heart in his games. Nothing can discourage the guy from doing what he wants.
I'm honestly surprised Shadows of the Damned wasn't a big hit, it had the kind of clever / in your face humour that should've captured millions of people. It's a very easy game to impress people with - a shame nobody witnessed it.
Yeah, I really thought they would've seen more success, especially given the Suda/Mikami pairing and its obvious similarities from a gameplay perspective to Resident Evil 4. But alas, it would not be.
If they do get the greenlight, I wish EA wouldn't be the one to publish it because I feel they were the biggest reason that game died when it hit the market. No advertising on it whatsoever. Such a damn shame - despite the killer end of year 2011 line up, SotD was still one of my favorites of the year.
Totally agree on the EA thing. Warner seems to be doing a much better job of getting Lollipop Chainsaw out there. I feel like Atlus would be a good match for Grasshopper.
