Shinji Mikami may just revive the genre of survival horror in 2014. He's the guy who brought us Resident Evil,so this does make me hopeful. I've been a fan of RE from the start. I've played the good ones(RE4,RE:Code Veronica,RE:Revelations),and the bad ones(RE:Survivor,RE:Dead Aim,RE:Outbreak,RE6) yet I still love it. Even like the movies, thought they have little to do with the games anymore. Just like watching Milla Jovovich and crew kick some ass. I have Resident Evil books and comics(from the first two games) as well the CG movies on Blu-Ray. So the possibility of Mikami doing something that goes back to basics has me excited. Just wish we didn't have to wait so long. At least we know it will be for PS4. I have been needing some good survival horror for years now.
I like my survival horror games good and bloody! The Evil Within looks like it will deliver on that. Besides the RE games I did enjoy Fatal Frame,Siren,The Suffering, and of course Silent Hill. That's another franchise that can be hit or miss. I like Silent Hill Downpour, which I've been playing lately. May get the Vita game and see if it's any good. Why did good survival horror sort of fade away? Makes me wonder,as it's a really good genre for fans of horror films and those who like thrillers of all sorts.
The next gen consoles offer up some great new ways to scare the daylights out of gamers. I read some things about The Last Of Us the other day. Talked about how amazing the sound design is for that upcoming game. The sounds the infected make are supposed to be terrifying and creepy as hell! That's an element that is useful as our minds create a picture of what is around the corner. You feel like you are the one about to be jumped from something in the darkness. The sharper graphics will allow game designers to create even more elaborate monsters and environments.
This shot looks like a scene out of Silent Hill. I will never forget playing the first SH game on PS1. It was so unlike anything I had played in this genre before. And sound played a big part in getting me spooked. That and the fact my vision was limited due to the fog. The music was great in that one, too.
Splattering of brains! Just a bit unsavory...but at the same time it's just lots of fun. This shot reminds me of Hellraiser for some odd reason. Why couldn't they do a Hellraiser game? That might be cool,as Pinhead is a great villain with a voice just made for a horror game. The Hellraiser films are like Resident Evil to me in that they seem to get worse with each outing. Did I mention Resident Evil:Operaration Raccoon City? Not a bad shooter, but does not resemble RE and is not scary in any way, shape or form. So what's the point of even doing it? I already have plenty of games just like it that do combat much better. I want something that is absolutely terrifying. Now that would be art.
What I'm listening to today..............
I have been listening to King Diamond lately. I grew up listening to his stuff and Mercyful Fate. That makes for a good sound track to survival horror game.
It sure would. Anyone who has heard the King Diamond album "Them" would agree. It plays out just like a horror film. Sounds, voices, the works....spooky! I found out their drummer at that point was Mikkee Dee,who now plays drums in Motorhead. Hope I get a chance to see King Diamond live at some point here.
Oh man! King Diamond videos give me the chills. Good chills.
Any KD fan is a friend of mine. Was fortunate to see him live during the In the Shadows tour. Everyone was chanting "Diamond, Diamond" before the show, and the first thing he said when he came onstage was, "Tonight we are Mercyful Fate". Then, after the show, my cousin was attacked by a drunk idiot with a baseball bat. He didnt get hurt, but it was weird, like KD put him under a spell or something.
I have the greatest idea in the world for a Survival Horror game.. But I have no way to get the idea out to publishers and gaming companies.. Such a bummer...
I've been listening to nothing but Steel Panther as of lately. Enjoy
PS: NSFW
They are going to play Rocklahoma this Memorial Day weekend! Too bad I have to work. I'm going to miss out on seeing The Sword as well. I'm sure that Steel Panther will do "Fat Girl" and "Girl From Oklahoma",it's only fitting. The crowd will love it! I'll bet your idea on the game is good, but you have to keep it under wraps I'm sure.
I have to check out Steel Panther. They could be a lot of fun to hear/see.
I hope Mikami does something innovative rather than just an excellent example of what's been done before, not that that would be bad. Doesn't seem like there have been many standout horror titles in recent years (you would know better than me, I'm sure). Regardless, those screenshots sure look good!
Seems like everything is turning into shooters these days. Like they decided no one has any patience for stealth or exploring. Scaring people is not easy these days, either. We have become so jaded by the horrors of the real world we are now immune to spooky stuff.
The game sounds insane. The one article that I read made it seem as though your character is slowly losing his mind.
I like that! The barbed wire around a brain could indicate that path is taken.
I have faith in Shinjji Mikami. Even Shadows Of The Damned looks like a blast to play. I just haven't gotten around to picking it up just yet.
RE 4 still was scary in places despite its' shift to action. I'll probably follow Evil Within more closely now. It's definitely peaked my curiousity with its' more psychological & noir approach!
I picked up Shadows Of The Damned for PS3,but have not started it yet. Reviews for it were great. Hope this new game pushes the boundaries of fear a lot further.
Can't say I'm a huge fan of the horror genre, but I did like Eternal Darkness. I like games that get in your head.
This one may just pull that off. I agree that the horror genre is not for everyone. Usually folks who are not fans of horror films don't care for these games a whole lot. Some games, like Splatterhouse, even get a bit too bloody for me. Movies that do that over the top blood business tend to bore me. I like suspense mixed into the story.
I didn't like Survival Horror games until I played Condemned. Now I'll give any game in the genre a chance. This one looks cool.
I think the problem with survival horror is that it's always been a niche genre. The cost to develop AAA games would probably prevent big developers from venturing into this genre. It's all about shooters now. I enjoy the RE franchise, but I've also allowed myself to open up to different horror type games like ZombiU and Left4Dead for example. I actually kind of like Dead Island even though it's very hack n slashy. The genre is dead, let's face it. A genre about dead things being dead.
Also, HD isn't very kind to horror. Seeing everythin clearly gives away suspense, and the opposite, having everything hidden in darkness is kind of lame. I'm looking at you new Silent Hill and Dead Space.
I happen to see this trailer and was curious to see what this game was all about. Survival Horror has been lacking as of late and right now I'm almost starving for some! Not much of a fan of the action horror. Give me creep environs and jump scares anyday!
