It appears to be all about advertising exclusive titles on the box. Only for N64. Only on Xbox. Only on Playstation. The so-called winners did not advertise exclusivity on their boxes.

I was going to argue the fact that 360 won 7th gen but then remembered how many fucking wiis were sold.
With how narcissistic Microsoft is, you know that within the first year they're going to be putting "Only on" on their boxes. Heck, they already have butchered the Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty Ghosts commercials with their attempted trickery of "We're gonna make it sound like you can only get the DLC here, mwahaha!"
