Did the Xbox 180 pull another 180?
What a way to return to blogging!
According to the website Gaming Blend, a 24 hour check in DRM moment was caught on film during a Killer Instinct Tourament. This came as a bit of a shock to many given how we were told my Microsoft during their now infamous "Xbox 180" that such features were not to be implemented in the Xbox One. This incident seems to contradict this statement given how the DRM check happend after a match which then forced the game to close and for the Xbox One to boot up back at the systems main screen. Originally this was thought as a possible hoax but video footage was made available by the Tournment organizer. The news article even goes as far as updating on the story to give compelling reasons why this event happened.
People are still awaiting official word from Microsoft on the matter but there have been theories and rumors floating about as to why the DRM check came about, despite the fact that it appeared that both users were logged in at the time of the Killer Instinct game running. Some have spectulated in the news article from Gaming Blend that the DRM check was done due to the game being a digital title and suspect that physical games are not to be affected. You can check the link at the bottom of this writing as well as the youtube video embed of the incident.
Either way if this was done because of Killer Instinct being a digital title, or the nature of Killer Instincts game model, it seems to give possible weight to those that feared buying an Xbox One thinking that Microsoft might try a "back door" approach in bringing back 24 hour DRM check in to their new system. Hopefully we'll learn more about the incident and how this will effect the Xbox One in the future as other videogame news sites investigate.
DRM check happens around 6:30 in the video.
Still awaiting offical word but I'm kinda glad I held off on an Xbox One purchase for the moment.

Oh, for fuck's sake...please tell me this was just a glitch or something. The old pre-E3 policies aren't any better with digital copy than physical disks. -_-
Right now we don't know how exactly this happened. Hopefully it was just a glitch or something wasn't done write with the game during gamertag sign in. Hopefully we'll know more on how this exactly took place. You'd think if this DRM was the case we'd have heard more about it. Espiecally with a popular game like Killer Instinct.
why am I not surprised?
Are you telling me you have no trust in Microsoft? I mean just because they originally created the system to be less than user friendly and they took part in the NSA PRISM program doesn't mean you can't trust Microsoft to be true to their word.
...wait....
It may be that their "can't just flip a switch" statement just meant they couldn't go back on this policy without tinkering with all the boxes, and some of them just happened to still have whatever DRM chip thingy causes this to happen, because they couldn't realistically get to them all in time before shipping the units.
Then again, I'm not going to pretend to have the proper knowledge to analyze why this might happen, so I'll just say any theories I come up with are pure speculation, and I wasn't planning on buying an XBOX One anyway, so I don't care. Also, now that I see footage of it in action, I'm not all that excited about Killer Instinct.
Your link is broken, though. My pointer cursor turns into a text cursor when I hover over it, and the link text turns from orange to black, but I can't click on it. The video works, though. "Yo, XBONE, what up!"
I'm with you on this one Joe. I think that particular xbox machine may have just had some the "old" hardware in there, or something to that effect. I'm really interested to see how this shakes out.
Given that other gaming websites have yet to run this story may indicate that there is more than what we are seeing with the video. Infact Gamesutra tweeted that they had to pull "a" Xbox One DRM story because it couldn't be independantly verified. Whether that story was this story remains to be seen.
Sounds to me that this could be a hardware issue but not exactly the original DRM protocols talked about. It could be nothing more than a step up DRM restiction from the original Xbox 360 features. the explaination I've been told sounds like that could be the case. But if that is such then the new Xbox One feature where it is REQUIRED for you to be signed into your gamertag for the game to play is rather lame. I can have a guest play on my Xbox 360 without my gamertag logged in, or connected to the internet, and that guest still has access to all my XBLA titles I own.
Either way we'll just have to wait and see.
There hasn't been much else said about the event in question. Most are saying that this was done on purose to make it look like it's a 24 hr DRM check. One person spoke to me saying something like this would happen if the kinect 2 was not conntected as well as the actually gamertag associated with the ownership of the digitial title wasn't signed in to the system. That logically makes sense and I'd have to take his word for it given I don't know much about the Xbox One.
Eiother way I don't really plan on getting a system either until a Halo game comes out. The link is also fixes so thanks for the heads up!
Yeah, I kind of suspected this video might have been making a mountain of a mole hill that had beans inside of it. I mean, they resolved the issue quickly enough as it is, and I hadn't heard a whole lot about there being a big problem with XBOX ONEs doing this. Glad to hear the link is fixed, though. It's good that you stay on your toes when it comes to stuff like this even if it might just be speculative, cause who knows how these companies will try to screw people or go back on promises.
I've been buying a lot of digital games off Steam and GOG lately. As much as I was against the original design of the XBone, I don't mind digital as long as it's optional. That DRM check looked incredibly annoying. I couldn't imagine having a whole system that revolved around crap like that.
I'm kind of okay to when it comes to digital games. I've found myself buying more and more of them now given I have the GB in my systems to hold them and you can get some at a really good discount. But I still won't want to have the conveiance of digital games if it means I'd have to go thru what just happened during that KI tournament.
When did gaming get so complicated? You used to be able to put in the game and play it but now you have to wait 10 minutes to upload and another 10 to install was bad enough now this DRM BS. Well, i'm glad i'm a Nintendo fan and PC convert.
I've been asking myself this during the middle portion of the last generation of gaming. I was getting tired of all the hoops I had to jump thur just to play a PS3/XBox 360 title. all the reasom why I might just go retro this generation if more events like this keep popping up.
Well, I hope that thing that happened was just a glitch, but this is Microsoft we are talking about. Let's just say I stopped trusting the Xbox and the way Microsoft is handling the console.
I could be more of a new standard in DRM that is a step up from the original Xbox 360 but not as draconian like the original Xbox One's features. I'd prefer it be a glitch though. Glitches can be fixed. So far no trust has been broken yet between Microsoft and gamers.
