Finding it hard to focus today, so briefly:

  • Name of the game is Routine. A first person, science-fiction horror adventure (or action-adventure) that looks like it recalls games like System Shock 2 and the Penumbra games. Official website boasts

  • A non linear experience lets you explore any part of the fully open Moon base and find out secrets that other players may not!

  • Be immersed with Full body awareness, Deadzone aiming, no HUD, no health bars or points system... you must run, hide and survive the best you can against what lurks in the base.

  • There are no health packs or multiple lives, in Routine there is a Perma death system that will keep you on the edge!
  •

This is right up my alley. I love System Shock 2, love horror games, love rogue-like features like perma-death that give your choices and tactics weight. The game is being developed by 3-4 people and it looks graphically slick, better than some games made by huge teams, showing once again how much bloat is in the AAA studio system.

I hope Routine has an exaggerated "moon jump". Seriously, just dealing with the moon's low gravity would be hella fun!

Would be neat. I'm letting myself be surprised with this one. Not going to read anymore previews

wow never heard of "Routine" before.  Looks cool.

A lot people haven't heard of it, I'm guessing. I hope that doesn't bode ill for sales. Maybe they need to smoke some IGN pole or something...

    Fuck that.

Having never played any System Shock or Dead Space games, only really ever getting into Eternal Darkness as far as horror games, and having never played a rogue-like or any game featuring permanent death, I have to say ...

this looks sweet, and I hope Steam gets it. I've never thought about the 80s futuristic aesthetic vs the new futuristic aesthetic in movies in terms of anything but neon vs. not neon, but the idea that 80s worked better because it allowed you to see more flaws is interesting.

In the 80s the influence of the first Alien film was still going strong. That movie ushered in a new look for cinematic science-fiction: industrial, gritty, shadowy, dirty, rusted, lived in.

Neon was usually the hallmark of lower budget films, filmed on L.A. streets, which costs less than building large sets.  The Blood Dragon game kind of gets it wrong, exaggerating immensely. That's more of an alternative universe 80s/fever dream.

Yeah, I never saw the Alien films .. or played Blood Dragon or any of those newfangled neno-styled "80s-themed" games for that matter.

My knowledge of 80s aesthetic is mostly based on music videos.

Oh my god man, you must be really young or hate movies. Alien is god-tier shit, so is Aliens.  Check them out.

And yeah, 80s videos do present a..colorful version of the real 80s. It was kind of like that, but only in certain venues (clubs, dances) and cities (L.A., Miami). I lived in Chicago, it was a little less neon. But I was a child then, so maybe I'm not remembering it accurately.

I'm 23 and love movies, but just never had the desire to watch Alien movies, really. I thought I had one in my Netflix que, but it must have been removed ... to be honest, I'll be spending tomorrow watching House of Cards anyway, though.

And I gotcha, I'd imagine most of what I've seen is Miami (Miami Vice comes to mind, i.e. "You Belong to the City") or the Sunset Strip in those days.

Woah! Cool. Loved the gameplay video. Were those robots chasing him?

Yep. Homicidal protocol droids are just one of the many nods to System Shock 2.

Whoa! C3P0 on a psychotic rampage. Weird.
