Sad news, everyone: The Year of Luigi is ending. Yes, Shigeru Miyamoto announced today that the Year of Luigi would be ending on March 18. That's 3 months after the year of the Year of Luigi started in. And I for one...couldn't be happier, and Luigi is my favorite Nintendo character. I'm a bit shocked in the first place that Nintendo had a celebration for the 30th anniversary of Mario Bros (which I wrote in a blog a year prior that they wouldn't), turn that into celebration of everything Luigi, but more importantly go all out for it. Seriously, Super Mario Bros' 25th anniversary didn't have this much pomp and circumstance than Year of the Luigi. With of all this green tinted plumber propaganda the big red N pumped out, you have to ask what good, if any, came from it?
If I could pick out one thing that was good that came out of YoL, it would be Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon. Dark Moon was great game, well the parts I played of it so far because I haven't finished yet. My favorite part is just how Luigi emotes. Yes, he still doesn't talk but how he's captured in the game, he doesn't need to be. You can tell in his face, his sheepish actions, and how he moves. Its one thing to play a game as Luigi but its another to play a game that litter ally makes you feel for Luigi. The other reason behind my love of Dark Moon is its interesting development story. If you haven't familiarize yourself with the story of Canadian developer Next Level Games' story over Dark Moon, do yourself a favor and do. Its a really fascinating story. No wonder that Next Level Games are now a Nintendo-only developer now.
Dark Moon was a really great start for YoL but it never reached that really great high to me. There was just a sea a massing silly and pointless stuff that came out of it, game or media. It kind of put a damper on what Luigi's main feature. He's an ethos to Mario. I mean wouldn't you not want to run into a lava castle after a woman? Wouldn't your knees buckle and shake a bit if you had to play a game against Daisy? However, the green straw that broke my back about Year of Luigi happened last week with the announcement of Super Luigi Bros, a hack ROM of Super Mario Bros that's mirrored and features Luigi. That's...lazy, pointless, and makes no sense, not even in the crazy logic of Nintendo. Its no wonder that YoL became a metaphor about Nintendo's financial troubles.
So now, I turn the question to you all. What do you think the best part of the Year of Luigi was? Or the worst part? For me, I'm just happy that Luigi's year is coming to end. I do love the green guy, but Nintendo has more pressing matters to attend to. I mean its 2014, WHERE'S MY NEXT GEN POWER GLOVE AT NINTENDO? WHERE IS IT?!
I think my favorite moment was Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon. That was pretty much the highpoint of the Year of Luigi. I borrowed it from my little brother last year and just beat it a while ago. I like it, I love Luigi's expressions in that game, and I think it does have more replay value than the original. I think New Super Luigi U was good too, everything else in my opinion is things I could do without. It's nice that Luigi is getting more exposure but we could have at least gotten more original Luigi games, not modified versions of games we've already played.
Granted, I would go save a woman from a lava castle because I'm just too nice. And yes, I want a next-gen power glove very badly.
You make a really great point. If there were more Luigi games that were actually new games it would been so much better.
I'd say I really bonded with my psp in 2013. Catching up on fun games like Final Fantasy Dissidia really made me realize what I had been missing!
coz me beating you over the head with it clearly wasn't working. LOL
Ironically, I bought a Vita last year...and ended up playing with my 3DS more. I will say that thing emulates PSP games hella good. Speeds up load times and it looks really good on the LCD screen. I play more of my old digital PSP games on it than Vita games.
Dark Moon was great and I played the original on my GameCube too finally. Then I played Dream Team with lots of Luiginoids. Great stuff!
I still haven't played Dream Team yet. I bought Inside story and planned to buy it after I played it .However I didn't finish it yet. Got stuck at the final boss.
I did the opposite. I got Dream Team, got stuck on a boss and then bought Inside Story and still haven't played it.
My favorite part of the Year of Luigi was the ending to Dark Moon. It's so ADORABLE. If you've beaten it, you know which part I'm talking about.
I think my least favorite part was Super Luigi U. Super hard stages that are really short that you have to beat in less than a minute is not fun.
Super Luigi Bros. doesn't bother me, as it's part of NES Remix 2, and that's what that game is all about.
Sad to see the Year of Luigi end, but now that'll free up room for Nintendo to have a Year of Toad, Year of Wario, Year of Kirby, Year of Princess Zelda, Year of Zero Suit Samus, and Year of Captain Syrup. Get cracking, Nintendo!
I really hope Nintendo doesn't do anymore Year of The "___". They have so many franchises, it wouldn't be fair because many franchises overlap with anniversaries. They just need to focus on their games.
Well they should still do a Year of Kirby. He's the best!
Hope to Play Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon. It looks very fun.
Yes Dark Moon is very fun.
Definitely Luigi's Mansion 2 because 2013 was the year of the 3DS for me.
Yeah I bought a lot of 3DS games last year but I didn't finish them all.
I liked New Super Luigi U. due to the added challenge. I got into it more because of that added challenge and the added stuff like Nabbit. Also I hear Dark Moon was fantastic.
Dark moon is really great. I've never played the first Luigi's Mansion but it makes me curious to try out the first.
