Really, Capcom?

After Final Round XVII, an Atlanta-based fighting game tournament (which was awesome this year, BTW), Capcom had a special announcement on deck.

See, Capcom had promised 5 new characters to join their latest revision of Street Fighter 4. After 4 of them ended up being transplants from Street Fighter x Tekken, I had high hopes that at least ONE of them would be genuinely interesting. Perhaps one of the long-requested characters like Alex or Karin? A character adapted from a different Capcom game altogether? A completely new character made from scratch? The prospects were tantilizing.

Then they announced that the character was never in any of the older games, or ANY fighting games for that matter, thus knocking out all the potential returning candidates. And that it was a character from the comics, meaning they wouldn't be from any non-SF games either most likely. And it was a girl, which whittled it down even further.

A lot of people, knowing Capcom, expected it to be the Russian "doll" named Decapre. Mainly because she looks exactly like Cammy but with a face mask and claws--which is right up Capcom's alley in terms of how much effort they'd put into all the other new content for Ultra. But Ono insisted that "only 4 people have guessed who she really is!" So the hope for me, at least, is that it would be someone more interesting.

Well, guess what? Apparently, Ono didn't pay much attention to what people were guessing, because it IS Evil Russian Claw Cammy. And not only does she look exactly like Cammy, but most of her animations are recycled as well. Between that, and how batshit insane her movelist is (teleports, Wolverine-style slashes and projectiles? Really?), she comes off like a bad fanfic character more than anything else.

Really, Capcom? The reveal of Spinal and Fulgore in Killer Instinct was far more exciting, and we KNEW THOSE CHARACTERS WERE COMING WEEKS IN ADVANCE. What the fuck?

Almost all the "new" content in the game is reheated shit from a title that came out two years ago (that had more than it's own fair share of problems). You really couldn't spare the money for at least ONE new character from scratch? Seriously? I don't think that's too much of a stretch, considering this is going to be the fifth revision of a game from 2008, and you're using this "new" content as an excuse to charge for the patch this time.

Between this, the disastrous rollout of SFxT, the DmC reboot, the Resident Evil fanbase fractured and demoralized, Breath of Fire being turned into F2P crud, and all the franchises that they've lost interest in doing anything with--including goddamn Mega Man--it seems like Monster Hunter and Dragon's Dogma are pretty much the only things Capcom has gotten right in the past few years. They make it so hard to have any real faith in them anymore.

It's amazing to me that they used to be my favorite publisher growing up. *sigh*

yeah that's how I feel about Square Enix -- it's like "What the hell???"

Pretty much. I've completely ignored the main Final Fantasy series since X came out. In fact, FFXHD will be the first Final Fantasy game I've bought since Dissidia came out. And the only new version I'm interested in has been in development hell for 8 years, and still has no release date. -_-

I still like Square Enix, but I wish we'd get some of their better games. Who knows when Dragon Quest will ever be seen in the US again. I'd love to have Dragon Quest VII and I'd give Dragon Quest X a shot, seeing that they did a great job with FFXIV: A Realm Reborn. Yeah, I know it was a do-over but at least they didn't give up on it. Bravely Default was quite awesome, but it took Nintendo's marketing muscle to make that happen in the US. Hopefully now that Bravely Default has been a success here Square Enix will be less reticent about some of its non-Final Fantasy RPGs. And Final Fantasy XII was my favorite Final Fantasy other than VII.

I don't really see why all the Internet rage about Capcom. Yes, their business practices suck, but it's not like this is anything new from them. How many versions of Street Fighter II did they release on the SNES, and that's nothing compared to how many revisions they did for Street Fighter on the PS1.

Plus, the entire industry is saddled with bad customer service practices like heavily crippled "free to play" cashgrabs games that actually want you to pay NOT to play them, and always-online tethering, and then game companies crying persecution when people call them out for it. If Capcom truly were the worst offender in gaming, the industry would be in healthy shape. As it is, the thing I'm most irritated with them is them teasing Breath of Fire 6 and then making it a F2P browser/mobile game.

I know I'm going to be a very, very small minority but I do like Decapre. Then again, I'm a Cammy main in SF4. I kind of look at her as an "adult" Cammy, you're going have to play her smart to get the best out of her like Oni...with that being said there's a hell of a lot of lazyness. Its sucks she borrows so much from Cammy, that her design is pretty been done via mods, and we're not getting a new character. Its why I'm more excited to play as Posion in Ultra. Poison really is the last newest character from the SF 4 series, where they really tried to do something different.

Oh and Final Round was pretty hyped...just wished I could see it all. Everytime time I had to leave to go to work.

I actually can't stand that Decapre is the new character because I play Cammy, too. Or at least I did--I've barely touched the game in over a year, and find watching streams more fun than actually playing it now. Capcom hasn't done a very good job of convincing me that Ultra is enough reason to get back in.

I saw this on Kotaku. As soon as I saw your story I knew what it was about.lol I felt that STF4TE was badly balanced, and the crap in SFxTek with making you buy all those stat bumps was just shameless. I have come to accept all my long time faves like FF, Contra, Castlevania, MegaMan, and now Street Fighter are simply dead or dying. Capcom ,Konami, and Squenix seem to have given up on them too.

It's a damn shame, really. Thankfully we still have Namco, ArcSys and Atlus around.

What's your problem with the DMC reboot? I haven't played it, but for me it looks cool.

Posted on March 17, 2014 6:14 PM

The story and dialouge were far worse than in the mainline games, the color-coded weapon system was annoying, and the boss battles weren't nearly as good. For all their talk about how played out the old Dante was, the reboot didn't feel necessary at all. I did like having a proper air dash and multiple grapple options, though.

Meh, for me it doesn't look bad on those aspects. I'll see what I think about it once I play it.

Throwing in a character that's merely a fusion of two pre-existing characters is kind of a dick move. That and "Decapre" makes me think of a fruit juice beverage more than a bad-ass Russian assassin!

"Ben....who did this...?!"

"De-Capre...Sun...ughhhhh! It was the sharp straw..."

LOL oh, wow... XD

Title of blog is pretty much THE most appropriate response to this news.  Were Juni and Juli really that popular that we needed another one of them?

Posted on March 18, 2014 3:42 AM

It's not about popularity. It's about padding the release enough to justify charging $15 for a big patch after the last one was free.

Posted on March 17, 2014 10:58 PM

I don't know how to assess it, to be honest all I want is Alpha 4.

Posted on March 18, 2014 3:43 AM

Ono says he wants to do another one. But he also said he wants to do a new Darkstalkers and that went nowhere fast. I wouldn't get my hopes up. :/

I kind of like the new character because I like Cammy and the other dolls make me think they could be like M. Bison's bumbling sidekicks that mess everything up like Bebop and Rocksteady.  Although I'm sure Capcom doesn't feel the same way.

You probably shouldn't listen to me, though, because I won't be buying the new Street Fighter game anyway.

Posted on March 18, 2014 3:45 AM

Oh, no, her backstory is all grimdark existential nonsense. It's the same all the dolls, including Cammy, who became a much better character after she was freed of her brainwashing.

And I'm not buying this either. :p

When you reach the top it's too easy to become lazy, Capcom having the monopoly on beat em ups leads to arrogance, much like Nintendo's attitude to the customer base it claims to serve.
