Turns out I owe Sony and Aksys an apology for dissing them. If I'd have RTFM I would have known that there's a check box under the power menu that reads Use Touch Screen Pointer In Games that is turned off by default.
Once the box is checked clicking L3 in a compatible game gives you a little white hand that you can move around the screen and click on stuff as if it was a touch screen. Clicking R3 brings up a little red hand (why did a Nick Cave song just pop into my head. LOL) that you can use to emulate the dreaded rear touch screen.
So Zero Escape: Virtues Last Reward (which is a great game by the way) works just fine and I'm dumb!

Go for it Dan I love the Damn thing. It's a great way to play ps1 games without stressing my ps3 plus being able to play psp and vita rugs on the TV. I think the bundle was down to 80 bucks at one point

I have it but I don't think it works with PS TV.
