Easy Rider soundtrack: The ending of this movie features Byrds guitarist Roger McGuinn's beautiful piece, "The Ballad of Easy Rider". That moment in the film made me look for this soundtrack for a long time.
Duran Duran - Arena: A live album from 1984, when they were huge. That's bass player, John Taylor, second from the left, and lit brightly to be the center of attention. Apparently he was the one all the girls swooned over. Go figure, I always thought the lead singer was always the most desired.
Ozzy - Just Say Ozzy. This is a live album for my 1990 playlist. It features Zakk Wylde on guitar and Black Sabbath's Geezer Butler on bass. I didn't realize Zakk join Ozzy so early in '88 with the No Rest for the Wicked album. I always thought he joined much later.
Pantera - Cowboys from Hell: It's possible I have this already. I'm having this issue where CDs in my collection are missing on my hard drive. I thought I'd ripped them all already. I'll check it later. Anyway, I always thought this was the first Pantera album with Dimebag Darrell on guitar, but I was wrong, because he founded the band with his brother on drums. I'm now going to have to hunt down their four previous albums because I think Darrell's guitar playing is inventive and inspired.
Flaming Lips - The Day They Shot a Hole in the Jesus Egg: This is a reissue of their 1990 album In a Priest Driven Ambulance, along with a collection of demos called The Mushroom Tapes. I can just feel the humor of this band in it's album titles. I can't wait to hear this.
World Party - Goodbye Jumbo: I was a big fan of their song "Ship of Fools" from their previous album Private Revolution. This is their second from 1990. I think I'll have to hunt down all their albums now.

I really like World Party. I found Karl Wallinger through The Waterboys but I lost touch with him after the first two albums.
I want their other albums now badly.
Oh, Duran Duran. When I was a little kid, when my parents would go out they would leave me at the house with a babysitter, and most of the time it was our next door neighbor's teenage daughter. This was in the early 80's, and she was obsessed with Duran Duran. So when she came over, she'd make me listen to every little piece of trivia she knew about Duran Duran. What their favorite foods were, shoe sizes, etc. Finally I just said, "Miss Stephanie, I'm just a little boy and not very interested in that stuff. Can I go watch Fraggle Rock now?" That just made her mad! I was trying to be as polite as I could! Well, anyway, that's my Duran Duran story. They're not a bad band at all, but that story is what I always think of when they come up, thanks to that wacky babysitter!
My sister was way into The Police and had all their pictures on her wall. Geeze. Girls.
My bro-in-law's band played a cover of Hungry Like the Wolf a little while back and I suddenly realized the bass lines were kinda great (I was playing bass at the time). So now I'm a fan and am trying to hear all their stuff. At the time (80s) though, I barely tolerated them and only begrudgingly agreed to like the song Rio.
Cowboys from Hell is the first album with Phil Anselmo as a lead singer and when their style changed from hair metal to what it was from then on.
My friend at work is a die hard thrash metal fan and can't forgive Pantera for their hair metal past. I say, whatever dude, this album is as raw and metal as any out there.
I love the groove of their music once they really became Pantera. I only own their best hits and live album though. My older brother was really into them when he was in high school. I initially HATED heavy metal and such as a kid, but grew to enjoy it later.
I was the same way. Metal came to me much later.
Pantera is a Texas band and I think their rhythm comes from that Texas blues thing, like what ZZ Top has. I've yet to really pin down what that is, but it's definitely a feel thing, or a subtle rhythmic thing.
Trust me, I know they're from Texas. I'm from Dallas. The Dallas Stars theme song is partially the riff from "Cowboys from Hell."
You must have that Texas boogie woogie in your soul then.
I liked Duran Duran, but I don't think I ever bought more than the one album (Rio), and I certainly didn't swoon over any of them like most of the other girls I knew did. Mostly because I knew their music wasn't really all that and a bag of chips.
It was pretty heavy on the pop cheese. That can be bad for you if you have too much of it.
Well, I had a collection of really good music, and then there were the "oh my god, what was I thinking when I bought that album?!" albums. I mean, given the choice between GTR or Duran Duran, Duran Duran lost out every time.
Wow. GTR. I thought maybe I was the only one to even know of that group/album. I like that album, but the singer they got comes close to annoying me.
