Game I love that everyone hates: Might be a stretch, but Super Mario Sunshine or Skyward Sword

Game I hate that everyone loves: The Last of Us

Posted on November 4, 2017 9:13 PM

I've definitely heard people hate on both your loved games; I'd say Sunshine is my favorite 3D Mario. Never played Skyward Sword, but if the critique of it was "it was too linear," that bothers me not one bit.

I don't hate The Last of Us, but I thought a large chunk of it was pretty dull. I just don't care that much for zombie apocalypse stories. Honesly, I thought the super-violent trailer for TLoU2 was great because it featured only humans and I find that element way more interesting.

I think a lot of the Skyward Sword critique was around the motion controls, which I get. I just didn't happen to have the troubles other did, with the exception of the swimming and flying, which controlled quite poorly. Otherwise, I loved the game.

I'm with you on Zombie Apocolypse stories. I think they suck and I thought most of TLOU was boring. The gameplay was mediocre and the story was so plainly obvious I just wanted it to end. Needless to say, I won't be investigating the sequel and I still haven't played the DLC from the first game.

Game I luv - Super Mario Bros 2.

Game I hate - Uncharted. First Xenoblade.

Posted on November 4, 2017 9:17 PM

Does SMB2 get hate though? I guess I've never heard much of it. It gets called "weird," but I couldn't say I've heard too many people not like it. But I have my little Internet cave, so who knows.

Uncharted gets what I think is a surprising amount of hate online. I love the series. I can understand why people don't like it to an extent, but I think some of the criticism that it "plays itself" is a bit much. If you mean the story, I can dig it, but I'm able to overlook a lot of that in the name of "well, he's mostly shooting mercenaries who aren't exactly highly moral themselves ..."

Love/Hate: Zelda II

Hate/Love: Dark Souls

Posted on November 4, 2017 9:18 PM

I'm one of the people who hates Zelda II. But I also don't enjoy Bloodborne and presumably Dark Souls, either. I can't tell if we just became best friends or frenemeies?

Posted on November 5, 2017 2:01 AM

I can be Vegeta if you don't mind being Goku.

Posted on November 5, 2017 8:41 PM

I never got into DBZ, so ... sure, I guess? I know Goku is the main character.

Posted on November 5, 2017 11:30 PM

Frenemies.

Game I love that everyone hates - Not really sure, Primal maybe but I think that's more Game that I loved that no one else played.

Game(s) I hate that everyone loves (or at least keeps buying)  Call of Doody or any number of first person military shooters

Posted on November 4, 2017 9:21 PM

I remember Primal Fury being an arcade fighter about dinosaurs I loved as a kid. I am guessing Primal is different. Either way, I couldn't tell you what I think.

I don't necessarily hate FPS as a concept, but I suck enough at them I lose interest pretty quickly. I want to buy Wolfenstein II for the Nazi killin', but I can't honestly say I enjoyed the first one past the first stages. I loved the insanity early on, but then the story got more serious and the enemies got more smarter. They 'atcheted me up, 'ey did! BLIMEY

Posted on November 5, 2017 1:10 PM

Primal is an action adventure/platformer. It's the story of a girl (Jen) looking for her rocker boyfriend who has been captured by a demon and taken to Oblivion. She teams up with a gargoyle named Snee er, Scree and the game invoives you using them both to solve puzzles.

The combat isn't great but the story and the dark worlds they travel through are. There are some hilarious moments in the game too.

It was one of the first PS2 games I bought and I also have it digitally on PS3 and PS4.

I see.

Posted on November 5, 2017 3:57 PM

The arcade game with dinosaurs was called Primal Rage.

Thanks!

Game I love: I wouldn't maybe say love, but Metroid Prime: Federation Force was a pretty solid shooter

Game I hate: GTA IV

Posted on November 4, 2017 9:22 PM

Never played GTA IV, but doesn't that one get a lot of hate in general for its boring missions?

I'll take your word on Federation Force. Never played that either.

Posted on November 4, 2017 9:42 PM

GTA IV also has a 98 on Metacritic so someone had to have liked it.

Posted on November 5, 2017 8:39 PM

I know it got good reviews at the time, but it seems people have largely turned on it since. Point taken. though.

Posted on November 3, 2017 10:39 PM

A game that I love that everyone hates has to be Rodea the Sky Soldier for Wii U. As for a game I hate that everyone loves I'd say Call of Duty Modern Warfare, but I did play the inferior Wii version, so take that with a grain of salt

Posted on November 4, 2017 9:24 PM

Is it that everyone hates it or that no one has heard of Rodea the Sky Soldier? Because ...

Anyway, CoD has always bored the shit out of me, so you're not alone there. I think the series gets plenty of flack though, it just sold like gangbusters for a while last gen. Maybe this gen too. Yeah, probably this gen too. Oh well.

First game that comes to mind for Love/Hate is Urban Chaos: Riot Response. It was the last game Rocksteady did before the Batman games. It got very average reviews but I loved it. I 100% the game on two systems.

Hate/Love. I hated Braid. Mainly because I hate platformers. I know that's heresy, but I'm just terrible at them and dislike repeating levels for a better score. Any game that makes me repeat a level more than a couple times gets my hate. I like the freedom to explore, to do new things. Keep me in one place too long and I fume.

Posted on November 4, 2017 9:27 PM

Was Urban Chaos similar to the Dead Rising games? Like just an arcadey slug fest?

As for Braid, I never played it but I can match your hatred of platforming with mine for ... come to think of it, I think the only games I tolerate involve at least some level of platforming. Well, damn.

But if you HAD to play the same levels over before they let you move on, I can see that getting irritating for sure.

Posted on November 4, 2017 11:26 PM

No. Urban Chaos was a FPS. You were a cop and firefighter trying to save people from gangs trying to create anarchy in a city. It was just a very good FPS with neat firefighter gear.

I keep trying those platformers. Some have graphics I can't resist like Rayman Origins/Legends. I've always liked DK Country but mostly because you can keep going and see new areas for the most part. Other platformers won't let you go anywhere without perfectly beating the level you are on. I hate that. I've been working on my patience in games. I feel like it's a good skill to have, so I try and persist a little longer every time I go back to a platformer.

Posted on November 5, 2017 8:42 PM

Oh, that's cool.

And stay away from Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment. Some of the mechanics are fun, but seem to pick and choose when they want to work.

Posted on November 6, 2017 1:18 AM

I kind of want to try Shovel Knight sometime.

Posted on November 8, 2017 6:34 PM

I dunno if you'd like it. There are some tiny platforms even early on. For veteran platformers, it's not too hard, but I was having some trouble timing certain things when I played on PS4.

Posted on November 4, 2017 6:18 AM

Everyone says Pokemon Channel was the worst Pokemon game, but I loved it.

Also, everyone raves about how amazing Earthbound was, but I didn't like it that much.

Posted on November 4, 2017 9:28 PM

I have no idea what Channel is, to be honest.

Earthbound made me cry as a kid cause I couldn't figure out where to go, so we're on the same page there.

Posted on November 5, 2017 5:25 AM

Yeah, when Earthbound came out, they packaged it with a strategy guide because goals and objectives were very unclear.

Love: Deadly Premonition

Hate: Call of Duty

Posted on November 4, 2017 9:29 PM

Never played Deadly Premonition.

Apparently, Pixlbit people really fucking hate CoD ...

Posted on November 4, 2017 11:45 PM

For me, it's also that a lot of those MP shooters get so much coverage from game sites, seem to ignore anything else, like Destiny coverage for example or CoD loot crate stories-- ad nauseam.

Honestly, if it weren't for twitter and podcasts I wouldn't have cared for Prey, Dishonored 2, Wolfenstein , Persona 5, Evil Within 2, and I wouldn't have known that Nintendo is on fire again with their new console.

Posted on November 5, 2017 10:35 PM

Deadly Premonition. I never finished it but I have several copies. I had fun with what I played. It's creepy and cheesy and I like that.

Posted on November 9, 2017 4:37 AM

Game that I love: Crimson Dragon.

Game that I hate: Overwatch.

Posted on November 14, 2017 3:32 PM

I've never played Overwatch. I just don't really get the appeal, honestly.

Posted on November 13, 2017 1:14 PM

One game I love that most hate is Roadsters on the N64. It was probably my favorite racing game on the system. As for something I hated everyone loved, nothing really comes to mind.

Posted on November 14, 2017 3:33 PM

I remember Road Rash on N64, but not Roadsters. Interesting.
