So here we are, Thursday and well last night I thought about getting a Switch, but at the end of the night I didn’t. I am probably going to wait to see if there will be some kind of sale for President’s Day, but today’s Versus is will I go with Physical games or make the jump to digital only. Now the PS3/PS4/360/3DS XL/PSP/Vita I have dabbled with digital games and for the most part they work fine but if I do go with a Switch I’m leaning digital full time, so here we go with today’s Versus.
Pros:
Physical
Own a physical copy: This is a big feature, having something that you can hold. No matter what happens in the future you have a copy of the game, and case. For previous consoles this was the way to go because I could lend/give the games away when I was done with them. I never sold them back because its a ripoff.
Sales: Some games as they get older they will drop in price, and at times brick & mortar stores will sell the game for less than it’s digital counterpart. I do love a sale.
Digital
Space: This is a big plus for digital because the games would live on an SD card. Instead of carrying around a case for games they are ready to go and I can load them up because they are already on the system.
The Cloud: If I don’t have enough space on the SD card I could erase the game and then at a later date come back to download it.
Cons:
Physical
Space: Games and cases take up space. I have old consoles and games that currently live in a closet to make room for the latest and greatest. While I love having a physical game the room they take up gets annoying.
Losing Games: This will happen eventually with a console that I would use as a travel gaming device. I’ve lost PSP games and it sucks.
Cousins: My younger cousins have become the folks who gladly take in old games I no longer want. If I go digital only they miss out.
Digital
Future: What happens when Nintendo or whoever runs their servers decide that they no longer want to host the game? If I somehow lose the game on the SD card I can’t get it back.
These are some of the things I’m thinking about right now. Most likely I’ll probably do both physical and digital, but after playing games on my laptop for a couple of years now, I really like being able to carry an entire game library on an external hard drive that is the size of a deck of cards. The random things you think about while eating lunch…Anyways have a good Thursday!
That’s all for now, more tomorrow!

I'm slowly getting used to the digital future. The conspiracy is doing a good job converting me. But I have in mind to build a small essential library of physical games. Anything that is not "must play" for me can go digital. Those remaining few, I'd like to own a copy to put on a shelf.
I like this approach, have physical of the "must haves". I would probably buy the digital first, and if I come across the physical game on sale I would pick it up but not open it.
Interesting. Best of both worlds. I like it. I'm at the moment formulating my list of games for my library. Whether I'll be able to get them all is another thing. But at least I'll have a list and can start the collection.
I'm stubborn and old fashioned, so I'll try to get physical copies whenever I can.
I was like this before I started playing on the PC but now I do like having all my games live on a hard drive, but I do like having the actual case & cart/disc in hand.
I really wish they'd just let you buy the disc/cartridge and offload that info as you please, like with CDs.
This would be the life, and get the best of both worlds.
I buy cartridges for retail games and digital for small games like arcade games and indies.
This is how I was with the PS3, and it worked but when a retail game is really cheap as a digital product its tough to say no.
I have hundreds of digital games but I prefer physical. Digital games I usuallly pick up when there's a huge discount on them vs physical or when physical is non-existent.
The bottom line with digital, you own nothing. You've paid your money but should PSN or the eShop decide to take a game away or shut down altogether (which they will eventually) you have no way to get a game back if your SD card or Hard drive gets corrupted.
Even if you say that it's not a problem because you've already played that game and won't play it again, your money is gone with digital and you have no way to get any of it back.
With physical you can always get at least some of your money back and in the case of a game becoming hard to find you can frequently sell it for more than you paid.
Until they got called out on it, EA used to pull this crap where they would suspend people's Origin accounts for trolling on EA's forums (especially the Mass Effect forums), and the people whose accounts got banned ended up losing access to any games that were tied to their Origin accounts, even if those games were physical copies. I think they fixed it after people started calling them out publicly for it, but it was still a shitty thing to do. Being a jerk on a message board should never be an excuse to lose access to games you've paid hundreds of dollars for.
And companies are charging the same amount of money for digital games as they do for physical copies of the same game. Sometimes digital ends up being more expensive.
Wow EA seems like they hate their customers. How horrible is that to lose access to something you purchase because you have a differing view on a message board.
I hate that companies charge the same retail price for physical and digital. At that point i'm going physical.
This is what currently bothers me with digital, at the end of the day it's almost a long time rental than purchase. I hope that the games will still be available but now you never know. I bought Deadpool on Steam because Steam said they can no longer offer the game so I grabbed it before it disappears, and now I wonder if Steam will secretly remove it without telling people.
I'm all digital on the Switch. Don't have time to wait for Amazon or switch cartridges. Pretty happy about it too.
I like this especially when I'm traveling and I don't want to lose a game. Turn the handheld on, pick the game and play.
I'm digital on small stuff like the Arcade Archives stuff and other little goodies like Celeste, but I buy cartridges for stuff like BotW and Xenoblade. I did get Puyo Puyo Tetris on cartridge though, but I tend to buy cartridges/discs when they're available. I tend to play the small arcadey stuff on the go and the big stuff at home with the Switch docked in TV mode. I will admit there are certain advantages to not having to switch carts, but with big games I'm not at that point.
Ive kinda done half and half. I started out more on the digital side but Ive slowly grown a Switch physical collection. Will say I prefer physical though, I dont like the idea of not "fully owning" the stuff thats bought digital. However if there is a deal or its digital only I will still buy it. If you buy a case for your switch a lot of them have a lot of slots for physical games in them. Dont have to worry too much about cases for the games or having to haul them around.
Having an actual cart in your hand is a big reason to go physical. I like digital because I don't have to swith out a cart. Most likely if I do get a Switch it'll probably be half and half as well for a bit before I start leaning one way or another.
