2. Fallout: New Vegas

Oh Obsidian, I love you. Hurry up and make a Mass Effect game, because we know you'll just ace it. I mean, Neverwinter Nights 2 > NWN1. KOTOR 2 > KOTOR. You make Bioware look like storywriting minors on so many occasions that you should just get it out of your system.

Fallout New Vegas continues this trend, but with Bethesda. Fallout New Vegas is leagues ahead of Fallout 3 in terms of characterisation and tone, and I mean why didn't we see it coming. The writers of the first two games worked on this! The choices are better. The characters are better. The story actually gives you a desire to finish it, and the factions are unique and wonderful.

Fallout New Vegas is the best open world RPG. Well almost. Come on guys, you know what's going to top this list...

1. Final Fantasy XIII

This game is a FUCKING MASTERPIECE! Seriously, it has the best characters in the series! It has token black stereotype, whiney anime chick, cold, calculated anime chick, goofy but sincere anime hero, and emo guy who makes Cloud look happy. Seriously, what's not to love?

And the fact that you actually have to work for your freedom in this game is symbolic of minority suppression. It takes 20 hours to get out of the corridor, but it's fucking worth it!

Oh and the plot! It makes no sense on purpose! IT'S ART PEOPLE! WHAT DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND ABOUT ART?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

The next game in the series will be amazing. How do I know? Lightning's Boobs got bigger!

Ok... You got me. The real winner is, as it has been since IGN wrote that stupid article that forced it into competition with Skyrim - DARK SOULS!

You knew it was coming, and I've waxed phiosophical about this so many times. So, for those of you who haven't read it, THIS IS WHY I THINK DARK SOULS IS THE BEST GAME EVER! For the rest of you... dear god March 11 can't come fast enough!

I can't believe that I almost fell for that.  I read FF XIII and thought...  Interesting choice.  I cannot believe that I had a momentary lapse of memory and forgot Dark Souls.

Posted on February 7, 2014 3:08 AM

Bahaha awesome! It worked on one person at least!

Posted on February 7, 2014 3:11 AM

It is just like people's birthdays.  I know exactly when they on every day of the year except their birthday.  I know that Dark Souls was going to be number 1, I commented to myself about how the top spot has to be for Dark Souls when reading the other 4 entries.

I know your gonna hate me for saying this...but New Vegas was the most buggy piece of crap I have ever played. I'm amazed my PS3 survived snce it crashed so damn much. Even after all the patches. FF 13 on the other hand... now that's a true masterpiece!!! No, not really lol.

Posted on February 7, 2014 3:13 AM

The problem with that sentence is PS3. Play it on a toaster and you'll have a better time. Seriously, Bethesda engines DO NOT WORK ON PS3. You've got a PC now. Try it again :)

Posted on February 7, 2014 3:30 AM

Yeah. Maybe if it goes on sale. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the game, but gah! I was seriously worried my PS3 would explode or something. I think PS3 owners just got screwed on that one.

Posted on February 7, 2014 3:28 AM

I almost fell for that too.  I was like "What the hell?!?!"

Posted on February 7, 2014 4:59 AM

Bahahahaha! It's such a great game though :p

Posted on February 7, 2014 3:34 AM

Bigger boobs, yes! Oh,I thought you were talking about bigger boobs in Dark Souls 2. Now I'm just disappointed again! (Truthfully I might try Lightning Returns though. Something about it calls out to me. My prediction? I'll love the combat but be utterly confused and nerd raging at everything else!)

Posted on February 7, 2014 5:01 AM

You don't get boobs much bigger than Gwynovere... She's a freaking giant!

Posted on February 7, 2014 4:49 AM

DARK SOULS!!!!!!!!! Freakin love that game. I can't wait for Dark Souls 2, it hurts waiting for it.

I played and beat FallOut 3 and dabbled in the DLC. Is New Vegas DLC worth it? I am thinking about gettin the GOTY edition but if the DLC isn't really worth it then I'll just buy the main game.

Posted on February 7, 2014 4:59 AM

The Fallout New Vegas DLC is a mixed bag. Some of it is amazing, some of it is meh.

And yeah... I pre ordered it to get the collectors edition... Now it's killing me not having it

You should post in Chris's Dark Souls forum if you haven't yet.

I still need to watch the commentary for Spoony's FFXIII reviews.

Posted on February 7, 2014 9:58 AM

Well, at least you had FF6 on your list somewhere.

Only cool thing about Lightning is she has pink hair.

Posted on February 7, 2014 10:46 AM

I hope you noticed that FFXIII was a troll and that Dark Souls was the number one pick :p. Although, if I saw FFXIII at number one legitimately, I would have closed my internet browser and gone outside, so I understand if you didn't.

Posted on February 7, 2014 10:05 AM

Damn, I've been trolled. Well doneLaughing

FF13 was the one of the worst ever it's back there behind X (wich is only in front because of most of the battle system).

I've yet to play DS because i'm allergic to hard games, but i'll give it a shot one day, I know it's good.

Posted on February 7, 2014 10:45 AM

Before Dark Souls, I hated hard games as well. I like Dark Souls because it's a different kind of hard. It's a "If you're cautious, observant, and smart, you'll be fine," as opposed to "If you don't press this million button combo, you'll die."

Dark Souls is one of those games that seems really hard until you learn the Souls series key: Shield up and get behind the fucker!

Posted on February 7, 2014 1:15 PM

I played New Vegas for about 5 min.  I really wasn't in the mood to play it at the time.  I need to get back to it.

Posted on February 7, 2014 3:58 PM

Knew you were trolling with FXIII.  It was like another person typed those words.

have to agree with your #1 and #2, at least for games of this generation. New Vegas has the depth of a classic CRPG, but now on consoles. People don't appreciate this fact. It's quite an achievement, really. And Dark Souls is my game of the generation (but sometimes it's Demon's Souls).

Posted on February 7, 2014 4:04 PM

Yeah, I go back and forth between Dark and Demon's Souls. Dark has better lore and combat, but Demon's definitely has the atmosphere. Tower of Latria is terrifying!

Also, what do you mean it was like another person wrote the words? It was sarcastic as all buggery.

I mean if one were to take it at face value. Your list was so solid (according to my tastes, at least), that FFXIII sticks out like a sore thumb.  Also because I've seen people seriously claiming the characters were the best in the series and that Gran Pulse validates all the corridor crawling that led up to it.

Posted on February 7, 2014 5:54 PM

I was already laughing when I read Final Fantasy XIII, I didn't need to read any further but I did and it was funny as hell.

Posted on February 8, 2014 3:47 AM

Thanks :)

Touche man, you almost got me with FFVIII. Why didn't I think of Dark Souls? Though, what really is your opinion of the game?

As for Fallout, I also need to play the series. Weird, I haven't seen Greenman defending why the third game is better though.

Posted on February 8, 2014 3:48 AM

What's my real opiinion on which game? FFXIII or Dark Souls?

Posted on February 8, 2014 9:01 AM

FFXIII.

Posted on February 8, 2014 9:03 AM

Oh. That's part of next week's blog series: Top 10 Most Disappointing games.

Posted on February 8, 2014 1:50 AM

At some point I will continue my Fall Out games...and actually try New Vegas.

Posted on February 8, 2014 3:49 AM

Please do! Unless you're playing on PS3. Then avoid Bethesda games like the plague because they don't run on that system well.

Posted on February 8, 2014 4:30 AM

Well looks like I have an excuse to get them on 360

Posted on February 8, 2014 4:38 AM

Yeah. This isn't knocking the PS3 or anything. But Fallout and Elder Scrolls games are the buggiest on those platforms.

Posted on February 8, 2014 9:27 PM

Wow, that caught me off guard at first. Pretty cool way to end the list!

Posted on February 9, 2014 4:26 AM

Thanks!
