Sin and Punishment: Star Successor is the sequel to the adrenaline-infused Sin and Punishment, an on-rails import shooter originally. Though originally released on the N64, the was finally able to see the light of day in North American and PAL territories on the Wii's Virtual Console. To put it briefly, the original felt like a cross between StarFox 64 and Galaga, with difficult, but wild, over-the-top bosses thrown into the mix.

And here's the good news: The sequel promises even more. In fact, Treasure has added in two-player co-op, allowing a friend to control an on-screen reticle ala Super Mario Galaxy alongside one of the game's protagonists, Isa and Kachi. Both characters play a bit different, too; Isa aims manually, has a jetpack, and has a quicker, single-fire charge shot, while Kachi has a gun that can lock-on, a hoverboard, and a multi-target, slow-charging shot.

Even more, Sin and Punishment: Star Successor allows gamers to use the Wii Remote to aim their targeting reticle, a feature many speculated would be perfect for the original N64 title. In addition, for those who don't like the pointer-style controls of the Wii-Remote and Nunchuk, the Classic Controller, Classic Controller Pro, and GameCube controller can be used.

Like the first title, Star Successor encourages players to build up a high score by shooting down waves of enemies while avoiding being hit. Unlike the first title, players around the globe can compete for the highest score, with online leaderboards. These boards will show both stage and character information, allowing players to compete in one of several categories.

All-in-all, Sin and Punishment: Star Successor looks to be a great addition to Treasure's already impressive catalog. It's now scheduled to be released June 27 in North America, so fans of shmup-style gameplay or StarFox should keep their eyes on store shelves come June.

Telepathically, in fact.

Oh, one of the most awesome things I found when writing the preview was the 2-player mode. At first I was bummed, since Player 2 wouldn't have an on-screen character, especially since there are two characters to choose from, but then I realized it was a marvelous way to let someone else just jump in and play without having to learn about the game beforehand, at all. It's very much just like Tails in Sonic 2, except Player 2 can't be left behind!
