Summer of the SEGA Genesis Mini 2: Part 1

While they aren’t as huge as they were a few years ago, mini consoles are great because they package some of the systems’ best games onto one tiny console you can relive the classics on.  But the problem is they don’t put ALL the great games onto one console!  Luckily last year SEGA released a second version of their Genesis Mini console with more different games, including some unreleased and SEGA CD titles.  I heard it was kind of hard to get, and even though I paid a tiny bit more for mine than I wanted to, it still wasn’t that bad.  So let’s take a look at what’s on the Genesis Mini 2!  There are so many games (60 in all) that I’ll have to split this blog into two parts.  So look for the next part in a week!

Cary's Best Games of 2020 Awards Show!

WORST.  YEAR.   EVER.  I think we can all agree that 2020 has been one of the worst years in our lifetime, what with the Coronavirus, quarantines, riots and looting, politics, and much more.  And it doesn’t seem to be getting any better, as I just found out my mom has breast cancer (keep us in your prayers).  Some days I wonder if we’ll EVER get through this.  2020 can just suck it!  But at least we’ve had some good video games come out to help keep our minds off of this dumpster fire of a year.  So here’s my Best Games of 2020 Awards Show! But keep in mind that this is my list and my picks only, no outside opinions and whatnot.  And if a game isn’t on my list, it either just didn’t appeal to me or I haven’t played it yet.  Can’t play ‘em all, you know!  But with that out of the way, let’s take a look at my picks.

WORST.  YEAR.   EVER.  I think we can all agree that 2020 has been one of the worst years in our lifetime, what with the Coronavirus, quarantines, riots and looting, and much more.  Some days I wonder if we’ll EVER get through this.  But there is one good thing about this year so far.  We’ve had quite a lot of really good games come out the first half of this year!  Normally I like to write a blog this time of year with my favorite games of the year so far, because the holiday titles and E3 announcements usually take precedence by the end of the year.  Of course, because of the Coronavirus there was no E3 this year, and as of this writing we still don’t know what big games will be out for Christmas.  Just another reason why this year sucks.  So I don’t know how much different my list will be by the end of the year.

More gets slowly added to the library as the year progresses. This is 1998 where I was in a band called Jack Diesel and suffering from a hypothyroid condition, which has since healed. I went from 160 lbs to 260 lbs over night. It was possible that my 16 hour work days got the better of me. I switched jobs, but not occupation, and chilled a bit. I met a guy who had a music studio and we shared it for a while. Nothing like trying to record stuff after midnight during the week. It's very quiet, maybe too quiet. I think I liked jam sessions better. Anyway, here are five media selections for your perusal.

The arcades were my first gaming experiences, and I've alwasy had a soft spot for the arcade classics. Thanks to Atari, Namco, and the Arcade Archives series, my Nintendo Switch looks like the arcade of my fever dreams. But I've always enjoyed the look and feel of arcade cabinets. When I was a kid in Arizona, the local Ak-Chin commissary always had arcade cabinets like Dig-Dug, Donkey Kong, and Ms. Pac-Man, plus arcades were at grocery stores, movie theaters, travel plazas, and of course, shopping malls.

I hate to admit it, but I’ve had a hard time dealing with all this Coronavirus stuff.  Well, I guess it hasn’t been TOO bad, but bad enough that I’m a bit disappointed with myself for not dealing with it better.  But I’m still really scared and anxious about all of it.  I have to say that I’m super happy that Animal Crossing: New Horizons came out when it did.  Couldn’t have come out at a better time.  It gave me a sense of normalcy and saneness during all of this.  I’m also glad that I’m still able to review games for that same sense of normalcy.  Speaking of which, here are more games I’ve reviewed lately over at GamerDad.com.  Please click on the links and read as many as you can, and maybe post a ‘like’ or comment or two.  I’d really appreciate it!

Anybody who grew up in the early '90s surely remembers Darkwing Duck, one of the great Disney Afternoon shows. Last year I found out there had been a Darkwing Duck revival in 2010 as a comic book and it was apparently very good, though it ran only about two years before its publisher lost the Disney license. A different publisher, Joe Books, finally picked up the license for Darkwing and the first thing they did was put out a giant, 400-page collection of the previous comic series. I finally picked it up after Christmas and have really been enjoying it. I'm in the second story arc at the moment. The art is great—looks like a very detailed version of the show—and the writing is spot on. I really love Darkwing's penchant for alliteration lol. If you have fond memories of DW or love colorful, cartoony comics, Darkwing Duck is a good one to check out. Joe Books has been making new Darkwing comics since getting the license, of course, and with the same creative team as before. The first volume of that just came out last month, which I'll probably grab that at some point as well.

Jump Around

Developed by Masaya, published by DreamWorks (no relation to the movie studio), and released in 1990, Trampoline Terror was quite the unique title if you managed to find out about it somehow. I’ve got to hand it to the design team-- they had me fooled with this game. Thanks to my youthful first-time impression of the game many moons ago, I always thought I was playing an overhead action title. I had so much fun with the game, that I didn’t even notice that I was really playing a puzzle\strategy game sneakily dressed in an action game’s clothes (more or less). I’m not sure why it didn’t click with me until now- some 20 years later- especially when most of the gameplay elements practically scream “this is a puzzle game”.

1998 and the Music

Who cares what was popular or what historic events happened in music in 1998. This is what I listened to. It ain't much or even all that interesting, but I really didn't have any strong feelings about the music in '98. About the most interesting thing to me looking back is this was the year Queens of the Stone Age debuted. I liked them then, but didn't follow them. Now I'd like to take a closer listen. Anyway, this is the stuff I listened to and remember well.
