Welcome to my last review of Nintendo's portable consoles. Today, I'll be talking about the 3DS, the little portable that could. It's been a wild ride with this system. From its not-so-humble beginnings to its numerous incarnations, and now, its slow walk into the sunset, it's had a good 8 years now. I'll be honest, the last time I bought a game for the thing was in 2014. Still, I did have a lot of fun with the system. It just felt like to me that it burned bright for only a short time. Developer support for 3rd party kind of dropped off. Plus, Nintendo's offerings felt more like afterthoughts because they were busy trying to push forward with the Wii U, and the versions of games offered were often watered down experiences from its big brother counterpart after the first few years. Still, I recognize that the market was strong even after I stopped playing it, and the target audiences were those that could not afford a home console. So let's get to it. But first, a meme:
There’s an itch that super challenging platformers scratch for me that other games just can't. While it’s always nice to dig into a classic platformer like Mario or something a bit more unique like Rayman, getting my fix of games like Super Meat Boy and N++ is a necessity. Shio fits very nicely into that niche and offers a decent chunk of gameplay, a unique hook that differentiates it from the crowd, and healthy offering of secrets to extend the experience.
First, I don't want anyone knowing how much I make, but I'm quite proud of my budget for March, which I just got done with a 50/30/20 Google Docs Worksheet. Not sure I trust Google with this information, but I am an American. I trust nefarious strangers in exchange for convenience. What are you gonna do?
Christ on a bicycle its been a good year for games. I've been thinking of what i was going to put on my top 10 games of the year list and this is the not narrowed down list. This is the list of every game that I like and think people should play. There are a lot. Over thirty, and I have the feeling I've forgotten something important.
One of my favorite things about being a gamer is that most games expect me to assume an identity outside of myself; someone or something that is capable of amazing and impossible feats, powers or talents that are beyond anything I will ever grasp in my actual life. N++, the platformer sequel to the popular N and N+ games, bestows a unique new persona upon us: you are a ninja with an accelerated metabolism. You are able to use momentum to run, jump, climb, collect and pass through a series of five levels like a boss. What’s the catch? Your lifespan is only 90 seconds.
I hate giving up on a game when I just start them, but I rarley have regrets when I do. Some games I never finished that I think were good games were Resonance of Fate, and Valkyria Chronicles. With Resonance of Fate there were long sections where you had to survive before reaching the boss at the end, a dungeon if you will. Dying half way and having to restart was very frustrating, but probably meant that I didn't understand the combat well enough. This is more likely true. Valkyria Chronicles, which is like an anime XCOM had long campaigns where you could end your game after an hour over a dumb mistake. Again, it probably means I didn't understand the game mechanics well enough to keep going. They are both really good games in my opinion, but with so many games to play out there, I don't feel like investing time to learn new systems all the time. I need to cut down to one or two games a month, instead of every week.
Most people have a top 10 or top 5 favorite games list. Most people have games that they'll replay over and over and over. I have enjoyed many games in my 15+ years of gaming. But these are my top 5 in no particular order. These are games I will always go back to.
Todays blog will be fairly uneventful. I just have too much of a headache today. So I'm feeling really lousy and tired. So um I guess I could go ahead and enjoy pictures of cats
Didn't really do much this week, at least in terms of playing games. Haven't played Dillon's Rolling Western in a few days, but I'll probably get back to it soon. Downloaded a few demos from the eShop the first being Witch & Hero.
Tiger Woods 2014 is a golf sim plain and simple, and is developed by EA Tiburon and EA published the game for the 360 and the ps3 in North America on March 26 2013.
I don't really think too much about April Fools Day any more. In many recent years, it's come and gone without me even realizing it. I suppose that's a good thing, as though I miss out on the "fun," I also miss the annoyance. And hell, Adult Swim playing a hilariously censored version of The Room isn't much of a trick, since after we both watched the Nostalgia Critic review of it I showed him, my friend Austin actually asked me to watch it with him on April Fool's Day; and it wasn't a trick, it was just as gloriously bad as I thought it would be, which made it great. Still, there's a certain something I miss about being so duped I had to slow clap for a job well done. From my memory, there's only two times this happened, and they were the doing of Electronic Gaming Monthly.
