Modes of My Gaming

Is it modes or moods, I'm not sure, but I had two modes I was in today. One was the mode of chasing after rewards points, the other was playing any old-school-looking turn-based RPG I could find on Xbox's Game Pass.

Mainly spent my time chasing down the weekly Game Pass rewards but tried some others as well.

First two I played for Game Pass rewards. The rest trying to clear up my harddrive. That 111GB Forza Horizon 5 has installed but is not playable yet. That's a lot of Gigabytes - the new norm I'm told for triple-A games.

I guess I don't have one game I'm totally obsessed with right now, so it's jumping around a lot from game to game. This will change on Nov 5 (I think) when Forza Horizon 5 drops.

This week it's clearly Halloween-style games on Game Pass rewards. I recall now that I've played a lot of horror games chasing rewards points over the year. I realized it when I got into a conversation with a Gamestop salesman and knew every game he, a horror game fan, was talking about. I did, at times, have some trouble differentiating one from another. It's what happens when you play a dozen or so games but just an hour or two each. I would probably play very few horror games if it weren't for Game Pass rewards quests. It's not my favorite genre.

Microsoft Rewards wouldn’t open today so I moved on to the Game Pass stuff. Then I played from the bottom of my list of installed games sorted by file size. It seems generally that the smaller the file size the more casual the game. This also means easier achievements, and so I was able to retake first place for the month amongst my Xbox friends.

I am going through my installed games list on Xbox One from smallest file size to largest, uninstalling ones that I finish or just get tired of. I also added a few by buying them on a sale.

I had to work today but at the right time, so I was able to visit my friend's place and my Xbox in the late afternoon. I knocked off a Xbox rewards quest and a Game Pass rewards quest before diving back into my attempted completionist run of Dark Void.

I definitely liked this offroad racing/adventure game but it's hard to stick to something that looks so bland compared to today's racers like Forza. Plus I had a few tiny issues with the map screen and the driver views.

Easter is coming up, so “Hoppy Easter!”  Let’s go on an egg hunt and find game reviews I’ve recently written over at GamerDad.com.  Every-bunny please click on the links and read as many as you can, and maybe even post a ‘like’ or comment or two.  I’d appreciate it.  OK, let’s hop to it!

I've moved on from Dragon Quest 11, and am ten hours into Tales of Vesperia now. I played it originally on the Xbox 360, but never finished it. When it came out for Switch, I bought a hard copy of it, but I only dabbled in it until now. It's really a great game, and I forgot how enchanting the stories and characters can be in Tales games. The combat is a little dated now, but I have no complaints with it. The banter between the characters however, is timeless.

Left my job early in the year, took some time off, then started community college that summer. It was a rough summer but I got into a routine at least, if not into gainful employment. That fall I started part-time at a local library while schooling. It's my favorite place on earth. Here are some of my favorite media from that year.

One of my first RPGs was Ultima III: Exodus on NES and PC. Ultima, along with Wizardry, was considered to be one of the two ancestors of the video RPG genre. Eventually I was able to get a hold of the other games in the series. The entire series is on GOG, including the spinoffs like Worlds of Adventure and Underworld.

Before we get started the breakfast of choice is leftover Wienerschnizel bacon wrapped hot dogs and what’s left of my chili cheese fries. This was actually supposed to be my dinner from last night but all I ate was the majority of the chili cheese fries while watching 90 Day Fiance. So Wienerschnizel is a hot dog chain where most of their food involves chili and cheese. I loved the place as a kid because the building is a long triangle with a slot cut in the middle for drive thru. Anyways as I wait for the impending heart burn and me questioning my breakfast choice let’s recap what I played.

What would we find on Mars if we ever tried to settle it? I'm unsure if it would be underground water like in my first game today. We'd probably need something more like moisture vaporators from fictional Tatooine. It also, definitely, would not be like the American West circa 1850 like in my second game today. Frontiers in space will be very different than the fictional worlds we've created, I have no doubt.
