Around this time, I like to make a list of games I’m looking forward to in the coming year. Of course, this won’t be a complete list, as there will surely be titles announced throughout the year that we don’t know about yet. Especially with the new Switch 2 console being out and all. Heck, this time last year we didn’t even know when the Switch 2 would be coming out! But these are the ones I know about so far that I want to try. So let’s begin!
I got to 35 hack 'n' slash games in March. The early ones go quick and some later ones just stopped me dead at some point with confusing mission objectives, difficult mechanics or some other dumb thing I couldn't stand. I have been trying to stick to each game as long as I can, pushing beyond my limits. I'll try even harder next month. There's nothing like actually finishing a game. I think I finished exactly 6 of these - all mentioned below.
I found a few more NES era games in the hack 'n' slash genre and I'll retell what I've played so far in the Genesis/SNES era.
There are a lot, so I may save some to mention later. The earliest of the games either didn't grab me, which means I only played them for 15 minutes or so, or they did, in which case I beat them in about an hour. I found some more of them than I mentioned before by cruising through collections too. I'm being pretty arbitrary strict in my choices: it has to say "hack 'n' slash" in the game's description or as part of the genre on wikipedia. So here's what I played (most of it) this week.
So for March I have console Generation 3 as the time period (NES, SMS, Arcades, Atari 8bit, C64, Amiga, Apple II and such - you know, second half of the 80s). To limit the choices, I thought about what genres were interesting at that time to me and Beat 'em Ups came up first but more specifically Hack 'n' Slash games are really my more focused favorite. Also a limit of 20 games, although, I did make a much bigger list in case I run out. Let's get into it.

Oh, watched the whole first disc of Batman The Animated series and discovered this video game show called Video Power. It's from the 90s. It has a kid DJ who gives you tips on games before and after a pretty lame animated cartoon. I just skip the cartoon and see what he has to say about Shinobi or whatever game it is that episode. Commercials plug the Tiger handheld games relentlessly in the first episode. Aside from the watching, there's the playing disclosed below.
There are so many games on the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 that I had to split this blog into two parts. So make sure to catch last week’s installment if you missed it. Anyway, here we’ll go over the rest of the Genesis games as well as the unreleased stuff and SEGA CD titles. OK let’s begin!
While they aren’t as huge as they were a few years ago, mini consoles are great because they package some of the systems’ best games onto one tiny console you can relive the classics on. But the problem is they don’t put ALL the great games onto one console! Luckily last year SEGA released a second version of their Genesis Mini console with more different games, including some unreleased and SEGA CD titles. I heard it was kind of hard to get, and even though I paid a tiny bit more for mine than I wanted to, it still wasn’t that bad. So let’s take a look at what’s on the Genesis Mini 2! There are so many games (60 in all) that I’ll have to split this blog into two parts. So look for the next part in a week!

Welcome back! We’re still on hiatus, but it’s time for our annual music special, and we have a jam-packed edition this year. We’ve gone back to our older format of getting together and talking about our music selections and what they mean to us. In traditional Nerds Without Pants fashion we overshare, things get heavy, and then there’s probably a joke about boobs or something. You know how it goes by now.
Another year has come and gone. 2022 was a great year for games! I was able to beat 29 games this year. Keep in mind that some of these were old games that were fairly short (such as the original Castlevania and Castlevania III for NES). There were some standout games this year. I'm going to talk about my favorite games that I beat this year (some of which didn't come out this year, but some certainly did). Then I'm going to give 3 awards: Best Game Collection, Best Soundtrack, and of course, my Game of the Year. So let's get on with it.
Thanksgiving is coming up, so I’ve prepared for you all a feast of game reviews I’ve recently written over at GamerDad.com. Shinobi, the 1987 arcade game, seems pretty good but I don't much like the way enemies act the same everytime you restart a level. I get quite bored of that pretty quickly. However, I'm not sad I spent $5 on Xbox Series S to play it again. I played it before as an unlockable in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection when you played Shinobi III. I liked that game a lot more. Well, I'm taking it off the random list. It's not something I am looking forward to trying again even though I believe it's a quality retro title. Below is a video.
By 1990, Sega was enjoying newfound success with their new 16-bit Genesis system. It quickly became a competent competitor to the NES with popular titles like Golden Axe, Phantasy Star II, and Revenge of Shinobi. But despite the rising success of the Genesis, the platform didn’t have a brand character that could rival Super Mario. Tasked with creating such a mascot, character designer Naoto Oshima came up with Sonic- a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehog was released on June 23, 1991- two full months ahead of the Super Nintendo’s debut in America. It was a big summer for Sega, and today marks the 30th anniversary of the moment that made them an icon in the home console gaming space.
A few months ago, we got a couple of downloadable only collections of Namco NES and Famicom games. I even wrote about them, which you can read here. But did you know that in Japan, they got a physical copy of the game on the Switch, and that it had different games and a new interface? I actually imported this game because it was only 30 bucks, which isn’t bad for an import title. So let’s take a look at this collection and what makes it different from the ones we got in the US!
Namco has just opened up a new wing in their museum, with two volumes of archives including a bunch of 8-bit NES and Famicom games! These two new downloadable collections contain almost a dozen games each. I’ll be your tour guide as we go through the games on these collections. So let’s go!
It's kind of rediculous how many games I sampled here the other day. Some favorites were Minecraft Dungeons, Golden Axe, Beast Busters and Ikari III: The Rescue. Feel free to jump to whatever game interests you. This is a long one.
I've actually been playing a lot, thanks to the Genesis Mini (even booted up the SNES Mini to play Secret of Mana yesterday), GameFly, and Yakuza, so I'm just going to dump brief takes on all the games I've been playing.
A couple of years ago, Nintendo made a big splash with their NES Mini and SNES Mini consoles. Now SEGA is joining the bandwagon with a mini version of their most popular console, the SEGA Genesis. But there have already been mini Genesis consoles with pre-loaded games on them, and Genesis collections on consoles, so what’s the big deal with this one? Well, mainly SEGA is making this one themselves, and they’re taking Nintendo’s approach to how they include which games will be on it. So what does that mean? Well you’ll just have to find out in this blog series. We’re going to take a look at the games on this mini console, but there are so many that we are going to split this up into three sections, one a week this month. For this first part, we’ll take a look at the Genesis Mini itself, and a few of the expected games on it. Don’t worry, we’ll get to the good stuff soon!
