I never thought I'd be looking back at the Xbox One and needing it, but I finally found some games I can only play there. I can get one for $100 too, which is a nice price for a console.
This week I played mostly Mass Effect 2 but also Flock. I bought EDF World Brothers on Switch with some Fetch rewards and I saw the Borderlans movie.
Early 80s video game technology had come a long way since Pong and Computer Space, but there were still limitations on how realistic graphics could be. Therefore; a lot of game designers drew on classic animation for inspiration, since the slapstick action and visuals were much more achievable with the technology that was available. Mario, for example, was inspired by Popeye.

I didn't play many of the most celebrated games at the time, '90-'94. I played my own thing which was brawlers, action games and a few sports and board games. My friend Mad Krammer (MK), who I still play with today, and I would get together and play whatever we had, which was, at first, a Genesis. We started going to flea markets and eventually picked up a SNES and then he ended up with some old computers from his job and we started in on PC gaming. Here's a year by year list of what I remember playing back then.
New console, Happy Meal toys and games played this week. Also OG Astro Boy episode 1 watched. Black and white and very influenced by early Disney animations. Good stuff.
The Philadelphia Phillies baseball club played its wild card playoffs this week and the play times fell on days I could actually watch them. Other than that, there were the games. I think I'll go in order of time played this time.
Most of my gaming's been done this week. I write this waiting for an oil change before continuing one more day. With time to kill, I thought I'd write down what I've played so far.
No, not real ticks, but THE Tick, the animated 1990s TV show based on the comic of the same name by Ben Edlund. I love this show so much: the big band swing style opening music, the humorous parodies of super heroes, the shear wackiness of the stories, and the loads of visual jokes that go on in the background or worked into a scene. It's smart, it's fun, it's silly; a perfect triple scoop icecream cone of a show. Oh, and I played a load of video games too. See below.
I picked up a few games today at Game Junkies along the lines of early 90s (2 Genesis, 2 SNES and 1 NES game) but not any of these listed below which were unavailable or pricey. Good thing many of them are available digitally with subscriptions or relatively cheap. Here's my list for '92.
Oh, watched the whole first disc of Batman The Animated series and discovered this video game show called Video Power. It's from the 90s. It has a kid DJ who gives you tips on games before and after a pretty lame animated cartoon. I just skip the cartoon and see what he has to say about Shinobi or whatever game it is that episode. Commercials plug the Tiger handheld games relentlessly in the first episode. Aside from the watching, there's the playing disclosed below.

I read this book about the history of board games recently. It was very well done.
Hey folks, I have some big news for you all! You know how the Super Mario Bros. Movie is coming out soon, right? Well if you go to see it, make sure to watch the credits because my name is in there under “Plumbing Consultant.” You see, in the movie, it shows the bros. as plumbers, and the animators needed to make sure the pipes they were working on looked correct. And since I work in the plumbing section of a major hardware store chain (true story), they had me do that. So why didn’t they hire a real plumber for that? Well, licensed plumbers are expensive, and they wanted to save some money so they had me do it instead. And because I do work for a major hardware store, they’re partnering with the Mario movie to sell special plumbing tools. So for a limited time, you can get plumbing wrenches, pipe cutters, and plungers with red or green handles, like Mario and Luigi!
One free comic book day, I spied a fantastic cover for an upcoming Bloodborne comic, Lady of the Lanterns, and had to follow it being a fan of Bloodborne and the souls games in general. I finally read the fourth and last issue in this story in February.
Every time I start up the Xbox I first check for any rewards points I can get by watching videos or playing certain games. This leads me to try a lot of stuff and sometimes find a new favorite. Here's what I played recently before long sessions of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands.
A couple of months ago I reviewed the PlayDate, a new handheld gaming device that has a crank on the side that you can wind to control some of the games. The other unique thing about this device is how you get the games. They come two at a time and are downloaded automatically on the handheld each week on a Monday. I talked about a few of them when I wrote my initial review, and then another batch of ten more about a month later. And now I’ve got my final batch of ten from season one, so we’ll go over those as well as my final thoughts on the PlayDate.
