So before I almost forget to post something and I get caught up in other exciting things to do inside because no masks, I am here typing up my Quick Hits blog for Friday. I just paid a bill, my back is still a little sore, which makes me in a blah mood. I can’t complain because it is Friday and I might venture into the backyard this weekend. OOOOOOHHHHHH. Let’s get started before I get more snarky and start criticizing things I watch on TV.

BaD #13: Deus Ex and Dead Space Novels

Finally, something I've read through! (I promise, folks, I do actually read things.) I love the Deus Ex franchise and have read both of the novels you see below. The first one, Icarus Effect, is a prequel to Deus Ex: Human Revolution and stars original characters. It is pretty good and really helps to set up the world that the games take place in. This novel was followed by a mobile game that was an honest to goodness full Deus Ex experience that continued the story of these characters. The game is supposedly quite good but when I tried it I could not grok the controls. The screen was so cluttered with buttons and icons and menus! The second novel, Black Light, stars Adam Jensen from the console games as well as some other familiar faces like Pritchard. Of the two it was the novel I enjoyed more, perhaps because of its intrinsic fanservice qualities, but they were both good. I don't know that I would recommend them to someone who was not a fan of the games (there are so many great science fiction novels that stand alone, after all) but if you enjoyed that world and are looking for more, by all means dive in.

So you have not heard from me...

I generally don't get excited for E3 anymore. I have too many great unplayed games as is. But I'm always down for something from Arkane (of Dishonored and Prey fame) and they've got a trippy new game that looks pretty cool.

By turning the little moments of downtime at work (and also lunch) into reading moments, I got through more books in 2018 than I ever have. I've blogged about books on occasion but with KnightDriver branching out in his blogs, I thought maybe I'd do the same. So first let's hit the novels I read last year.

Greetings True Believers!

Spider-Man is my favorite superhero, but his video game history has been a deep well of untapped potential. He’s had good games still worth playing today, yet he’s never had an entry on par with Batman’s excellent Arkham titles. Marvel’s Spider-Man is Insomniac’s attempt at elevating Spider-Man to the same level as Batman. While they do not quite reach that same quality standard, there is a solid foundation for Insomniac to build upon.

Hey guys, sorry I've been away for so long. Had a bit of a depressive slump, had a bit of a breakdown, had some life shit. It's okay though, I'm feeling a lot better now! Getting therapy, on decent meds and whatever, and while I still have my blue periods (gross), I'm a lot healthier and have a lot more confidence in myself. I know I was a complete and utter self destructive asshole who got swept up in being super selfish and in general kind of a cunt. At the same time though, I now recognise that I am getting better. I'm feeling empathy again, which means I also feel a lot of guilt over some things I have done that I don't overly want to go into here, but I also recognise that it's all part of getting better. Sometimes you have to feel worse to get better.

Work was ... interesting today. Let's just say certain meetings don't need to be addressed to everyone and sometimes attacking negativity with more negativity leads to more negativity ... don't mind me, just vague Facebooking on an entertainment website. Clogging up your escape website with gossipy bullshit.

I know this isn't breaking news—the story I first saw was posted January 30—but the Deus Ex franchise has apparently been put on hiatus after Mankind Divided failed to meet sales expectations. As a big fan of the series that waited five painstaking years for this sequel, this news is crushing, especially considering how Mankind Divided left the story just hanging there. What if we have to wait another five years? WHAT IF WE NEVER GET ANOTHER? I am very frustrated. And so they can work on Guardians of the Galaxy? *grumble grumble*

Well I promised it, so here it goes... I plan on showing off a lot of games. I figure 12 a day at 28 days would be meeting my threshold, plus my thoughts on the games themselves. I plan on doing a better set up with my camera with other games and experimenting with different ways to take pictures so let me know if 12 is enough or if I should just sprawl my mountain of wii games across my living room!

Another year in the bag! 2016 broke new ground in the "Whaaaaa-! It's already over??" category. Somehow I managed to play some games in there, so let's take a look. First up are all the games I beat this year and then how many I bought or somehow acquired (don't worry, I don't list those specifically). Be sure to stick around for the Golden Hippo Awards after that!

We can rebuild it. We have the technology.

As video game enthusiasts, we tend to want sequels to be these huge shifts from the previous iteration of a series, sporting tons of new features and locations while retaining the core concepts that made the game fun in the first place. It’s a tall order, and obviously some sequels nail this formula while others miss the mark entirely. Then there are games like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, which is “just” more of the same mechanics and progression as seen in 2011’s Human Revolution. While there is little to set Mankind Divided apart from its predecessor that isn’t a bad thing, is it?

My GOTY Shortlist is a long ass list.

Christ on a bicycle its been a good year for games. I've been thinking of what i was going to put on my top 10 games of the year list and this is the not narrowed down list. This is the list of every game that I like and think people should play. There are a lot. Over thirty, and I have the feeling I've forgotten something important.
