Keen for 2013

2013 is really the start Console Generation 8, but to me it's still Gen 7 because the Xbox One and PS4 came out late in that year, and I didn't get either one until maybe a year later. Yes the Wii-U was out in 2012, the 3DS and PS Vita in 2011, but it really felt like Gen 8 fully to me in 2014. So this is the last year I'll review until I get past all the Gen 7 systems in my retro journey this year.

In revisiting my collection, I'm trying to keep it brief by not respawning unless I can't resist it. I restarted many times in Space Invaders Extreme, for instance. I wanted to respawn in Minecraft, but didn't. Sometimes I just want to leave something for later. Going back to one I've 100% completed is kind of downer. So these are this week's revisits.

The first thing that comes to mind is changing my Xbox gamertag. I got one in 2004 when Xbox Live Arcade dropped but a mini-game on an Official Xbox Magazine demo disc was giving me trouble in '07, and I thought a new gamertag would solve it. Well, it did solve it, but I lost touch with my old gamertag over time, and now it's probably been deactivated along with the few games I bought under it. It'll be 20 years on my current gamertag next year. It could've been 23 years if I'd stuck with my original one.

Back in 2022, Pac-Man World: RePac was released.  It was a remake of the original Pac-Man World game on PlayStation.  I even wrote an article about it here.  I encourage you to read that article I wrote because the original Pac-Man World game was a very special game to me as a game reviewer, and the remake was even my Game of the Year in 2022!  I wondered if Pac-Man World 2 would get the RePac treatment someday, and this year it did!  I didn’t like Pac-Man World 2 as much as the original, but it was still a special game to me and I thought I’d explain why in this article, and go over my thoughts on the RePac version of this game as well.

Like I said, I saved the best for last.  These final Genesis Mini games are the ones that impressed me the most, or at least impressed me that they got put on here in the first place!  Most of these games have never been on a Genesis collection before, and some have never been released at all!  So let’s take a look at them!

I've been playing this game for over a week. An interesting thing about playing the game this way, in short bits or 1 chapter or section per day is that it really felt like a very long journey. I felt emotionally drained and exhausted when I got to the finish line and the ending still has my head spinning. Haven't really gotten around to formulating a final opinion on the whole thing. The ending made me kind of angry because it made me feel like all the hard work was for nothing. As much as I tried to stealth through a lot of it, I didn't like the way the game forced me into combat and in the end I felt more like a killer as in any other game and the whole thing reminded me more of Spec Ops the Line, with the twist ending. That game criticized you for being a killer where the game didn't really let you opt out of combat, and the same thing happens at the end of TLOU, so it felt cheap to me. This is a first impression. I have to bake on it some more and maybe give a more thorough explanation later, but as of now I think the game was just okay, while I really loved the world, mood and atmosphere. Also, those clicker zombies didn't bother me as much as most people. I thought they were very interesting challenges and refreshing to zombie type games. Might try a new game +, maybe a replay will help me focus thoughts more.

This will be a continuing theme for quite a while. You see I own 250 or so wii games (I've lost track by now), and will probably get more and more. Why? Well I can't pass up a cheap game for $5 and bargain bin buys bring out the crazy game collector in me. As such with 250 games and being expanded upon in the future I haven't played em all. But here is the start of a descent into collecting Wii games madness that I embarked upon!

Well, summer’s almost over, so you know what that means.  It’s time for me to talk about the movies I saw this summer (and some in the spring, too), as well as movies I wanted to see but didn’t get a chance to.  I’ll try to keep things spoiler-free, but there may be a few that slip out, so just be warned.  So let’s do this thing!

PS Vita, We Hardly Knew Ya!

For the longest time, I didn’t own Sony’s newest handheld, the PS Vita.  Which may seem strange at first, because I loved the PSP, Sony prior handheld.  In fact, other than the Neo Geo Pocket Color, the PSP was the only other handheld I bought that wasn’t made by Nintendo!  There were lots of PSP games I loved to play: Loco Roco and its sequel, Ys Seven, Half-Minute Hero, Gurumin, Mega Man Powered Up, and many more.  But the Vita just didn’t have as many games that I wanted to play, or at least not enough to warrant purchasing one.  But after a few years they’ve built up enough games that interest me, and since I couldn’t think of anything to ask my family to get me for Christmas, I just threw a Vita on my list and to my surprise I got one late last year as a present!  So here’s my impressions on the Vita and some games I got for it (probably a little too late, but hey, better later than never).

I just saw today that Overlord: Fellowship of Evil is coming out late September for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. I am so psyched! It does look a bit more like Diablo this time, but how can I resist the funny writing of Rhianna Pratchet, script writer for the other Overlord games and the recent Tomb Raider reimagining. I'm preordering this tomorrow even though I still don't have a current gen console. I think I might finally get a Xbox One for this though.
